B&K Mechanix is your local full-service Napa AutoCare repair facility, family owned and operated for 30 years. The owner, Kurt Lovell is a Class A mechanic who specializes in parts service management. He has been at the shop since 2011.
B&K Mechanix specializes in automotive repair. This means they handle everything from breaks, mufflers and general exhaust, to alignment, air conditioning, and suspension.
B&K Mechanix originally started in the fall of 86’: “It just started because my dad owned part of the shop and his original partner had a shop uptown that used to be a gas station. He wanted to get out of there so they joined forces and we’ve been at the same location ever since.”
Kurt grew up in a family filled with skilled trade workers: “My dad is a fully licensed tech, even my dad’s uncle. My dad’s uncle owned this building when my dad was a kid and it was a wrecking yard. Then my dad had the chance to get it, he knew the building. That’s probably why he got into it, because of his uncle. Growing up, all three of us were mechanical, my older brother is a technician as well, so I guess you could say it’s a family trade. So far my boys seem to like tearing stuff apart too, not so much putting it back together.”
Kurt, who has always lived in Glencoe, says he enjoys working in the town because there’s a sense of camaraderie amongst those in the industry: “We all get along, we share tools, whatever we can do to help each other we do. Which is very lucky I think.”
How did he get to be the owner of B&K Mechanix?
“At first, it was my dad and his partner, then my dad and his partner’s son, then me and dad. When my dad retired it was just me, but now I have my nephew who helps me in the shop, and Sandy who helps me with some administrative work.”
Today, Kurt is the owner and primary mechanic at B&K. He continues to take courses in order to learn and update himself with relevant information for auto mechanics.
What sets B&K apart from other mechanic shops?
“I think we just offer really good customer service or we try to anyway.” Kurt also mentioned that many families have been loyal to B&K for generations “grandparents came, their children came and now the kids are coming too. We have always had a lot of that. I pride myself on being super honest with people.”
While speaking with Kurt and discussing B&K’s code of ethics, he touched on the fact that honesty is the most important trait to have in this industry.
He goes above and beyond when servicing his customer’s cars by educating and engaging them every step of the way: “I’m not one of those people who can’t work with somebody working over my shoulder. I grew up doing it, and still, do it to this day. It’s a force of habit to just show people everything because I figure in the end it helps you when you have a problem, to come to me and say it’s doing this or that”.
Kurt is passionate about helping kids tap into their potential:
“Even kids that have trouble learning, they should be able to do a trade because it is mostly repetitive work that they can apply hands on. And I’m that way, I don’t learn from the book, I have to tear it apart and figure it out myself. That’s why I like having the co-op students here because some co-op students I hear parents come and say ‘well they didn’t get to do anything, all they wanted them to do was sweep the floor’ and I say well around here they’re not getting that, they’re getting their hands dirty and working. I tell them if you have any problems come to see me, but you got to learn how to figure it out yourself first”.
He explained that working at the shop can provide co-op students with some first-hand experience in the industry before they enter the job market.
What does Kurt have planned for B&K?
Kurt wants to continue to grow his customer base and hire more mechanics for the shop. He plans on continuing to work as he always has, with honesty and transparency.
What would Kurt like to share with you?
“We are a family run business and I pride myself on quality work. I’ve heard so many bad stories and I think that’s what hurts our industry, but to me, we can’t afford to do that here in Glencoe. You do that to one person, you’ll have 10 people mad at you. Whereas in a city, they may not care because they’ll have 10 more people following through the door. That’s why as a customer it’s good to be well informed so you can understand what actually needs to be done.”
B&K Mechanix long standing experience and continuous commitment to providing quality repairs speaks volumes. You can trust Kurt to be honest and open with you every step of the way. Visit B&K Mechanix in Glencoe for all your car maintenance needs!
